The Ministry of Energy and Business – originally named the Energy Division – was established in 1978 under the Ministry of Trade on the advice of technical assistance experts from the Overseas Development Administration of the United Kingdom. Since 1978, the Ministry has expanded into an organisation responsible for oil and gas, renewable energy and energy conservation (having amalgamated with the Energy Conservation Unit). The Ministry also provides geological and earth science services to other Government departments, as well as to the private sector. |

Barbados National Oil Company Limited (BNOCL)
BNOCL was incorporated in 1983. It however commenced operations in 1982 when the Barbados Government acquired the former Mobil Explorations Inc.’s production facilities.
For many years, the company’s primary objective and core business is the economic exploration and production of Barbados’ onshore hydrocarbon potential within a 16,438 acre area.
Its main subsidiary, Barbados National Terminal Co Ltd manages the storage and distribution of fossil fuels, as well as the storage and exportation of crude oil for the group. In recent years, BNOCL has sought to restructure into a fully integrated energy company and is therefore actively involved in implementing a number of domestic and commercial renewable energy projects.
National Petroleum Corporation (NPC)
NPC was established by the National Petroleum Corporation Act Cap 280 on April 1, 1981 as the successor to the Natural Gas Corporation. The NPC is the sole distributor of natural gas in Barbados, via its distribution network and its primary function is the sale of natural gas for domestic, commercial and industrial use.
The NPC’s existing pipeline network comprises of over 350 miles of transmission and distribution lines which service several parishes, these are St. Michael, St. James, St. Thomas, St. George, St. Philip, Christ Church, St. Andrew and St. Peter.
The NPC is currently undertaking a Project aimed to enhance Barbados’ energy security and sustainability by diversifying its energy matrix through promoting the use of cleaner fuels for power generation and increasing the use of Renewable Energy (RE) sources.

Export Barbados
The Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) commenced operations on December 1, 1992, for the purpose of developing Barbados’ industrial, export, and other related activities.
Chapter 340 is the act that governs the Corporation’s existence establishing it as a world-class export-driven economic development agency. Since 2021 it has traded as Export Barbados (BIDC).
Functions of the corporation include:
- To advise on, promote and facilitate the development of export trade
- To conduct and facilitate research into investment, industrial development and the export of products and services, and to make information available to persons on request
- To engage in the export of such products and services as the Corporation considers necessary
- To establish, expand and encourage the establishment and expansion of enterprises to engage in the production of goods and services
